True to his name this young blackback is a happy-go-lucky character. He was named Tifayo as he had no qualms about approaching the trackers to study (in his thinking) this new species of ape that had emerged from the bowels of the forest. In his curiosity he often led his posse – the other juveniles and sub-adults – in examining the habituating trackers. So after Nshongi had charged at trackers to his heart’s content and had eventually wearied of it, Tifayo would furtively sneak close to the humans to examine them better followed by his little band of curious followers.
Once the silverbacks and adult females realised that the trackers bore no ill-will to Tifayo’s and his explorers, they too mellowed towards the humans.
Blackback though he be, his loyalties still with the young ones to whom he is a self-styled leader and protector. This young blackback shows leadership qualities and by befriending him you could be friending the future leader of the Nshongi group.
