MUKIZA - INFANT
Name: Mukiza (Not to be confused with the sub-adult Mukiza of Kyaguriro family).
Meaning of name: Also means ‘saviour’ in Rukiga:
Age: Between 2 to 3 years
Who’s yo daddy? Nshongi, or Mishaya or Kakono
Who’s yo mama? Nkuhene
As would be expected, Mukiza is a curious, playful baby gorilla. This curiosity was especially useful during habituation because Mukiza’s mother, Nkuhene was particularly given to fleeing deep into the bowels of the forest at the first sight of the trackers.
Once the furore over the trackers had somewhat died down, Mukiza would stealthily creep away from his mother to investigate the trackers. On noticing her baby was not with her, the mother would mount a search and would find Mukiza near the trackers. She soon learned that the curious primates were no threat to her and her offspring and came round to accepting them as part of the forest animals.
For the part played in helping Nkuhene take to the trackers, she was called ‘saviour’.
